Interactive University Project

The Seismological Laboratory is collaborating with a number of UC Berkeley Departments and Organized Research Units to coordinate the campus education and outreach activities and to develop an information infrastructure to improve the delivery of these services. The Interactive University Project attempts to integrate these campus efforts. The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory participated in phases I and II of this project.

In order to foster a diverse approach to education and outreach through "information infrastructure", The Interactive University Project sponsored a number of pilot projects. At UC Berkeley, the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory, the Center for Particle Astrophysics, the Center for EUV Astrophysics, and the Museum of Paleontology combined forces to create the ISTAT Project - Integrating Science, Teaching, and Technology.

From 1996-1998, we worked with several schools in the Oakland and San Francisco Unified School Districts:

As part of this project, we developed an ISTAT Resources in Seismology Web Page and the first of many Digital Curriculum guides. When the ISTAT Project received continued funding under a three-year IUP Community Learning grant, we continued working with 4 schools:

As part of this project, we also developed an Earth Science scope and sequence for the 9th grade, which includes course outlines, curriculum resources and a monthly feature (last updated March 2002) called Earth Science in the News. The ISTAT project held several workshops in the San Francisco Unified School District in order to introduce this material to the 9th grade science teachers. In 2000, the ISTAT project was profiled in an article for the Berkeleyan:
