This earthquake occurred on the Calaveras Fault. The Calaveras Fault runs NNW-SSE through the East Bay and South Bay until it merges with the larger San Andreas Fault near Hollister. The 1984 Morgan Hill earthquake, a magnitude 6.2, had its epicenter just 3 km south of where this earthquake occurred. According to the 1999 report by the Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities, the Calaveras fault has an 18% probability for producing one or more M6.7 (or higher) earthquakes before 2030.
