PKD1 - Haliburton House, Parkfield, CA, USA
- Location:
-
The PKD1 site was located at the Haliburton House in
Parkfield, California, and under the auspices of
the United States Geological Survey. This installation was undertaken as a
temporary site while the search for a permanent station
was conducted. The PKD site was
installed in 1996, but dual recording continued until
the USGS was asked to vacate Haliburton House in 2000.
- Geology:
-
Quaternary alluvium
- Vault/Borehole conditions:
-
The pier was a 4 inch concrete slab poured directly on the
clay-rich soils. The STS-2 was housed in a thermal
isolation container which sits on the slab. The
datalogger and support equipment are sited in an
air conditioned room of an adjacent house.
This site required frequent recentering of the
broadband sensors.

- Operation Notes: (may not be current)
- This section summarizes major changes in equipment or in instrumentation at PKD1.
- 09/25/2000: The PKD1 site was closed, as the USGS
tenancy of Haliburton House was terminated. The frame
relay circuit was relocated to Carr Hill
in order to continue transmission of PKD data.
- 12/20/1999: Upgraded Q980 with MSHEAR software.
- 03/08/1999: EM sensors removed.
- 10/01/1998: GOES clock replaced with Quanterra GPS clock.
- 01/15/1998: Upgraded Q980 with 4 Gb disk and ethernet card.
- 12/14/1997: Upgraded Q980 with USHEAR software.
- 01/07/1997: Acquistion of STS-2 stopped. STS-2 removed on 05/27/1997.
- 07/12/1996: Switched to frame-relay telemetry
- 06/06/1995: Began acquisition of EM data.
- 05/23/1995: The Q980 unit was replaced.
- 08/12/1993: The Q980 unit was replaced.
- 02/11/1993: The PC-based 16-bit datalogger was replaced with a
Quanterra Q980 24-bit unit.
- 03/11/1992: The gain was changed on the STS-2.
- 11/07/1991: The gain was changed on the STS-2.
- 10/22/1991: A Streckeisen STS-2 and Kinemetrics
FBA-23 were installed with a 16-bit PC-based datalogger.
- Noise Characteristics:
-
The figures below are cumulative plots of power spectral density (psd)
determined from the broadband channels. In each figure, the vertical
component psd is plotted with blue diamonds, the north component
psd with red squares, and the east component psd with green circles.
The results are presented in the 5 different frequency bands, and
the USGS/Albuquerque low noise model is plotted as a dashed line in each.
The PSD units are in dB (decibel) relative to 1 (m/s**2)**2/Hz. The current
annual plot is updated weekly.

- Data Availability:
- BDSN waveforms and associated metadata are available at the
Northern California Earthquake Data Center (NCEDC).
Several tools provide access to SEED format data at the
NCEDC, both in terms of querying the archives and
allowing data requests.
- Querying the archives
- Requesting data
Help on using these
tools is available.
